State Court to Review Cipro Class-Action Lawsuit: AttorneyOne.com Warns the Threat of Severe Adverse Events from Cipro Remains

The media spotlight is often a double-edged sword. No one knows this better than people who suffer from Cipro severe adverse events. And yet, gossip and rumor-mongering aside, the real story here is being overlooked according to Sean Burke of AttorneyOne.
Last month, the California Supreme Court agreed to review a class-action lawsuit over the drug Cipro. Cipro is a brand name for ciprofloxacin, of a class of antibiotic drugs known as fluoroquinolones. Manufactured originally by Bayer, it is used for many types of infections including pneumonia, skin infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis and joint infections, among others. The lawsuit argues that it was illegal for Bayer to pay a competitor to stay out of the market as part of a settlement in a legal dispute over the Cipro patent.
Cipro and other antibiotics have long been reported to cause serious side effect, including tendon damage. During the period November 1997 to December 2005, the FDA received 262 reports of tendon ruptures, 258 cases of tendinitis and 274 cases of other tendon disorders in patients using fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including Cipro, as reported by Public Citizen. In 2005 the Illinois Attorney General's office requested that the FDA require the manufacturers of Cipro and other fluoroquinolones to add a bold "black box" warning to the drugs' packaging, with no success. In 2008 Public Citizen filed a suit against the FDA (case no 1:08-cv-00005) in the District Court of Columbia. Finally, in July 2008 the FDA notified the manufacturers of Cipro and other fluoroquinolones that henceforth a black box warning and Medical Guide would be required.
